There are many different type of sugar but we are currently looking at sugar coming from the sugar cane. Early manuscripts state that sugar cane originated in India and from there it was spread into Afghanistan.

Sugar wasn’t always used as a sweetener. Honey was used as a sweetener before sugar became popular. In those days (before the 18th century) sugar was a luxury and expensive in Europe.

In the 19th century sugar was considered a necessity and sugar cane was planted on a large scale. Slaves were used to cultivate and process the insatiable demand for sugar.

Originally sugar was purchased in loaves which had to be cut with a sugar nib. Later granulated sugar was sold in bags. They then also started making sugar cubes in the nineteenth century.

Refined sugar is raw sugar that has undergone a refining process to remove the molasses from it. Refined sugar is used in cooking, baking and to sweeten beverages.

From a health point of view sugar has gained a bad reputation lately. Sugar itself however does not cause obesity but rather the over consumption of it. As they say everything in moderation.
