1 Egg
2 tbsp Water
1/4 tsp Mixed Herbs

Batter

1 1/2 cups Flour
1 1/4 tsp Baking Powder
Pinch Salt
2 Eggs beaten
1 1/2 cups Milk
3 tbsp Melted Margarine

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 180°C.
  2. Grease a 24cm x 24cm ovenproof dish.
  3. In a bowl, mix 600g mince, 1/2 packet onion soup powder, 1/4 cup tomato sauce, 1 egg, 2 tbsp water, and 1/4 tsp mixed herbs until well combined.
  4. Shape the mixture into rissoles and place them evenly in the ovenproof dish.
  5. In a separate bowl, mix 1 1/2 cups flour, 1 1/4 tsp baking powder, and a pinch of salt.
  6. Add 2 beaten eggs, 1 1/2 cups milk, and 3 tbsp melted margarine to the dry ingredients. Mix until a smooth batter forms.
  7. Pour the batter evenly over the rissoles in the dish.
  8. Bake for 60 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and cooked through.
  9. Serve hot with vegetables or a fresh salad.

Hints & Tips

  • Brown the rissoles first – For extra flavour, lightly brown the rissoles in a pan before baking.
  • Check doneness – If the top is browning too quickly, cover loosely with foil for the last part of baking.
  • Flavour boost – Add a little grated cheese to the batter for a cheesy crust.
  • Mix up the meat – This works well with a blend of beef and pork mince for extra juiciness.
  • Serve with gravy – A rich onion gravy makes the perfect accompaniment to this pie.
