Orange Cake Recipe

This moist and fragrant orange cake is soaked in a sweet citrus syrup that makes every bite burst with fresh, sunny flavour. Perfect for afternoon tea or a simple yet impressive dessert.

Cake

3 Eggs
1 cup Sugar
1 1/2 cups Flour
1 1/2 tsp Baking Powder
3/4 cup Milk
3 tbls Butter

Syrup

1/2 cup Boiling Water
1 cup Sugar
1/2 cup Orange Juice
1 1/2 tsp Orange Rind (grated)
1 tbls Butter

Instructions

  1. Cake – Preheat your oven to 180°C.
  2. In a mixing bowl, beat together the eggs and sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Sift the flour and baking powder, then add to the sugar mixture.
  4. Heat the milk and butter until the butter melts, then add to the flour mixture and mix well.
  5. Pour the batter into a greased pie dish.
  6. Bake for 25–30 minutes until golden and cooked through.
  7. Syrup – While the cake is baking, add the boiling water, sugar, orange juice, grated orange rind, and butter to a saucepan.
  8. Bring to a boil and cook for 5 minutes.
  9. As soon as the cake comes out of the oven, pour the hot syrup evenly over the top.

  • Use fresh oranges – Freshly squeezed juice and zest will give a brighter, more intense citrus flavour.
  • Prick the cake before adding syrup – This helps the syrup soak in evenly for extra moisture.
